Alpine is challenging the result of Formula 1‘s Monaco Grand Prix by requesting a review of the penalties applied for pitlane speed that cost its driver Pierre Gasly a podium.

Gasly was one of many drivers punished for tiny speeding offences in Monaco, with six penalties – two of them incurred by Gasly – during the race after a variety of fines in practice sessions.

Gasly was just 0.1km/h and 0.4km/h over the 60km/h limit in his infractions.

Under the FIA’s right of review system, a penalty can be challenged if “a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned”.

The Race understands that the Monaco penalties were mostly earned because drivers were cutting the white line that denotes the fast lane in the area around the Cadillac pit, which is slightly more open this year than when it was funnelled more tightly by barriers on both sides.

The speed of a car in the pitlane in F1 is measured using electronic timing loops and the FIA transponders, rather than through a camera or a gun.

The car will pass over multiple loops in the pitlane and then the system calculates its speed based on the time taken to travel that distance.

As the fast lane is used to calculate the pitlane distance, even a marginally too aggressive cut of the line would shorten it.

Gasly finished third on the road but dropped to seventh in the results when his penalty was applied.

He was disconsolate afterwards and appeared to hold out hope that either the penalties could be annulled or changes made to the regulation for the future.

“I don’t think there is anything that could hurt me more right now,” he said when asked for his view by The Race.

“It’s 10 years I’m f***ing working my ass off for this type of moment and we did everything right.

“Standing on that podium in front of all the fans that turn up – this is the type of moment that, for me, can’t be taken away from us by unfair reasons. Because what’s going on right now is not right and hopefully they can make the right calls.”

He was adamant Alpine could prove his car had not actually exceeded the 60km/h limit.

“I know for a fact that what’s in the car is below the 60km/h,” said Gasly.

“I know on both occasions I’ve put it [on] way before the [pit speed limit] line. That’s probably the most simple setting you can put in a Formula 1 car.

“They can see on the data. You can look at the speed that we are going at. It’s precise enough.

“Hopefully we can fight because it’s not going to give my moment back in terms of celebrating on the podium with the people. A podium is a podium and in 10 years I’ve been fighting very hard to get every single opportunity. I’ve managed to get five podiums which is not enough if you ask me and I deserve this one.

“Hopefully they can do something.”
