Formula 1’s Monaco Grand Prix has been red-flagged 10 laps from the finish after two separate crashes at the final corner.
An initial safety car was called for Lance Stroll crashing his Aston Martin out of 16th place at the final corner.
At the subsequent restart, Ferrari‘s Charles Leclerc went into the wall at the same place while running third.
The safety car gathered the field again, but shortly afterwards the FIA suspended the race and it will now inspect the track surface at the area where the two crashes happened, having announced a suspected “track break-up at Turn 19”.
Ironically both Stroll and Leclerc denied the the track surface caused their crashes, blaming problems with engine braking and brakes respectively.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has completely dominated so far for Mercedes, with front row partner Max Verstappen’s Red Bull failing at the start.
After temporary repairs at the last corner, the race will restart at 5.12pm local time, just over half an hour after the stoppage.
Antonelli will lead it from Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari and Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull.
The second Mercedes of George Russell fourth but having incurred just a drivethrough penalty for multiple infractions during the race – although Hamilton and Hadjar are also under investigation for safety car procedure infringements.
